Mid-century cast brass decorative figurine featuring the iconic Maltese dolphin design. Stamped on the underside with "MALTA" alongside an engraved eight-pointed Maltese Cross. Solidly cast at 840g, this piece has a satisfying weight and works brilliantly as a paperweight, desk accessory, or standalone shelf sculpture.

The stylized dolphin—characterized by its curved tail, scale detailing, and mythical, fish-like facial features—is rooted in ancient Greco-Roman maritime symbolism, where dolphins represented protection, ocean guidance, and safe passage. Over the centuries, this classical aesthetic was adopted into traditional Maltese architectural metalwork. Known locally as il-ħabbata, brass dolphin door knockers became an iconic feature of Grandmaster-era and 19th-century townhouse doors across Valletta and Mdina, later serving as Malta's post-independence emblem. Local brass foundries produced freestanding ornamental sculptures and bookends modeled directly after these historic door fittings for visitors to bring a piece of Mediterranean heritage home.

Measures 17 x 13 x 8 cm and weighs 840 g.

Very good vintage condition with signs of age. The brass displays a lovely characterful patina with natural surface wear and dark tarnishing retained within the chased scales and recessed areas, highlighting its sculptural detail.
