This vintage try square is a professional-grade carpentry tool manufactured by the renowned British firm I. & D. Smallwood Ltd of Birmingham, England. A true piece of industrial history, this No. 530 model features a heavy-duty steel blade and a substantial hardwood stock, reinforced with a traditional brass faceplate to ensure a perfectly level 90-degree angle during use. The stock is elegantly secured with three decorative brass diamond-shaped washers, a hallmark of Smallwood’s high-quality craftsmanship.

What makes this particular tool exceptional is its provenance as a government or military-issued piece. The wooden stock is clearly stamped with the British Broad Arrow (crow's foot), signifying Crown property, alongside a 1972 date stamp and a NATO Stock Number (910-6414). This indicates the square was built to the rigorous durability standards required for military service. It includes a teardrop-shaped finger grip recessed into the wood for better control against workpieces.

This tool measures 28 x 17cm. The condition of the piece is very good, showing a beautiful patina on the brass and wood that reflects its age and authentic history. It remains a robust and functional item for a woodworker or a significant addition to a collection of British military-marked tools.

This piece would suit a collector of vintage militaria, a professional carpenter who appreciates traditional English toolmaking, or someone looking for high-quality industrial decor.
