An authentic mid-19th century Victorian antique mourning brooch, dating to circa 1850–1860. The brooch features a multi-tiered floral rosette and scrollwork design meticulously hand-set with thin, faceted black Vauxhall glass panels centered around a floral bloom topped with a starburst-set seed pearl.
Demonstrating classic mid-19th-century Vauxhall glass craftsmanship, each paper-thin glass panel sits over an underlying silver/foil mirrored backing—a historic light-reflecting technique that creates a luminous shimmer beneath the glass facets. This silver-backed foil construction explicitly distinguishes authentic Vauxhall glass from solid, thick-molded French Jet.
The reverse features a black-lacquered (japanned) metal backing plate fitted with a period long pin stem, hand-fitted tube hinge, and a simple C-clasp.
Please note condition: The brooch is in overall good antique condition for its age and delicate glass build, with evidence of period repairs. All black glass panels are present and securely set, with a chipped/cracked panel on the upper edge in line with its age and delicate construction. The reverse backing plate shows natural age tarnish alongside evidence of historical solder/reinforcement repairs to the framework, while the long pin stem and C-clasp operate smoothly and hold securely.
