An authentic mid-19th century Victorian antique horseshoe brooch pin, dating to circa 1850. The piece features a classic good luck horseshoe form meticulously hand-set with thin, faceted black Vauxhall glass oval and round stones.
Demonstrating classic mid-19th-century Vauxhall glass craftsmanship, each paper-thin glass stone sits over a silver/foil mirrored backing plate—a historic light-reflecting technique designed to bounce light back out through the glass facets. This silver-backed foil construction explicitly distinguishes authentic Vauxhall glass from solid, thick-cut French Jet.
The reverse features a blackened metal backing frame fitted with a period long pin stem, hand-fitted tube hinge, and a simple C-clasp.
Please note condition: The brooch is in very good antique condition for its age and delicate glass build. All black glass stones remain intact and securely set, showing only light edge nicks/flea bites consistent with age. The reverse frame shows natural age patina, while the long pin stem and C-clasp operate smoothly and fasten securely.
