An authentic mid-19th century Victorian small antique buckle, dating to circa 1850. Suitable for a shoe embellishment or sash ribbon fastener, the piece features a compact rectangular openwork frame hand-set with thin, faceted black octagonal Vauxhall glass stones surrounding an inner floral relief border.
Demonstrating classic mid-19th-century Vauxhall glass craftsmanship, the paper-thin glass stones sit over a silver/foil mirrored backing plate—a historic light-reflecting technique designed to bounce light back out through the glass facets. This silver-backed foil construction explicitly distinguishes Vauxhall glass from solid, thick-cut French Jet.
The reverse features a blackened (japanned) iron framework equipped with an original central pivoting bar and three small prongs that move smoothly from side to side to secure fabric, silk ribbon, or a shoe strap.
Please note condition: The buckle is in overall good antique condition for its age. All black glass stones are intact, present, and securely set. In line with its age and iron composition, the reverse mechanism displays natural age oxidation and light surface rust, while the central pronged bar moves smoothly as intended.
