An authentic mid-19th century Victorian antique starburst rosette hairpin fork, dating to circa 1850. The piece features a multi-tiered flowerburst head set with thin, faceted black glass marquise-cut petals mounted on two long prongs.
Demonstrating classic mid-19th-century Vauxhall glass craftsmanship, each paper-thin glass petal sits over a silver/foil mirrored backing plate—a historic light-reflecting technique designed to bounce light back out through the glass facets. This silver-backed foil construction explicitly distinguishes Vauxhall glass from solid, thick-cut French Jet.
The reverse features an authentic period articulated pivot bar mechanism that allows the dual metal prongs to move smoothly from side to side, ensuring the decorative starburst flower head sits flush and secure within a hair bun or updo.
Please note condition: The hairpin is in overall good antique condition for its age. All black glass petals appear present and securely set. In line with its age and delicate construction, there is general wear across the glass facets, including a crack across the central glass stone and a small chip on one of the petals. The dual metal pin prongs move smoothly from side to side as intended.
