An authentic Victorian mourning bow brooch pin, dating to circa 1860. The brooch features a ribbon bow silhouette meticulously hand-set with faceted French Jet (deep black glass) stones that catch the light with brilliant sparkle.
As an authentic item of Victorian mourning etiquette, French Jet mounted on japanned dark metal was widely favoured during the mourning periods for its dramatic reflection and durable craftsmanship. The reverse exhibits a solid iron/steel reinforcement bar fitted with a period hand-soldered tube hinge, an extended pin stem, and a simple C-clasp typical of 19th-century construction.
Good antique condition for its age. All faceted French Jet black glass stones are intact, bright, and securely set within their prongs. The japanned iron backing shows a natural aged patina with minor surface oxidation/rust along the rear reinforcement bar consistent with age. The iron pin stem and C-clasp function properly and close securely under fabric tension.
