An authentic Victorian mourning and sentimental brooch pin, dating to circa 1860. Hand-carved from a single solid block of natural Whitby Jet, the brooch features a high-relief dimensional Lily of the Valley floral motif detailed with deep undercuts and carved foliage.
At the center of the lily blooms sit two original flush-set clear garnet gemstones alongside one antique glass paste replacement stone. The two clear garnets have been tested and confirmed as genuine gemstone material using a Presidium Gem Tester II. In Victorian floriography and sentimental symbolism, Lily of the Valley represented the return of happiness, while garnets symbolized deep love and devotion.
The reverse features a smooth, hand-polished flat back with an antique/vintage replacement metal pin bar assembly secured with jeweler's cement—a classic period restoration to keep this delicate 19th-century organic gemstone piece wearable.
Good antique condition for its age. The carved Whitby Jet body remains dark, lightweight, and warm to the touch, with a couple of micro edge chips that reveal the true solid black conchoidal fracture underneath. The garnet and glass stones are firmly set, and the rear pin mechanism closes securely.
