An authentic Victorian mourning starburst rosette brooch pin, dating to circa 1870. The brooch features a central high-domed faceted black glass cabochon framed by a halo of ten pyramid-cut French Jet (black glass) stones that catch the light with brilliant sparkle.
As an authentic item of Victorian mourning etiquette, French Jet mounted on japanned dark metal was widely favoured during the mourning periods for its dramatic reflection and durable craftsmanship. The reverse exhibits authentic period construction, with each glass stone hand-wired onto a blackened iron ring frame fitted with a tube hinge, extended pin stem, and a C-clasp.
Good antique condition for its age. All faceted French Jet black glass stones are intact, bright, and securely set. The japanned iron backing shows a natural aged texture and patina with minor surface oxidation/rust along the pin stem consistent with age. The iron pin stem and C-clasp function properly and hold securely.
