An authentic Victorian mourning brooch pin, dating to circa 1870. Crafted from deep black French Jet (glass) mounted onto a japanned dark metal backing plate, the brooch features a central oval panel with a raised classical lady profile cameo framed by a starburst/rosette halo of faceted glass petals.
As an authentic item of Victorian mourning etiquette and dark fashion, French Jet was widely favoured during the mourning periods for its dramatic reflection and rich texture. The reverse exhibits authentic period construction, complete with a hand-soldered tube hinge, long extended pin stem, and a simple C-clasp.
Please note condition: The brooch is in good overall antique condition for its age. All stones are present and securely set; as noted, one small accent stone on the right side of the outer ring has been historically replaced with a mismatched faceted glass stone. The japanned metal backing retains its dark finish, and the pin mechanism functions smoothly and holds securely under fabric tension.
