An authentic Victorian hair pin or hair comb, dating to circa 1850. The piece features a three-dimensional layered flower bloom meticulously hand-set with faceted Vauxhall Glass (deep black glass) marquise-cut stones around a central core. Vauxhall glass was used as early as the Georgian Regency period, but I would date this somewhere around circa 1850.
The reverse features a period articulated pivot mechanism allowing the two long iron prongs to move side-to-side, ensuring the decorative floral head sits flush and secure within a bun or updo.
Good antique condition for its age. All Vauxhall glass stones remain intact and securely set. In line with its age, one stone exhibits a small hairline crack and a couple of stone edges display light surface wear. The hinged dual metal prongs move smoothly as intended and slide easily into hair.
