An authentic late Victorian mourning bar brooch pin, dating to circa 1870–1890. Crafted in dark vulcanite (hardened natural rubber), the slender rectangular bar features tapered bevelled ends and a smooth face with a subtle sheen.
As an authentic piece of Victorian mourning etiquette, vulcanite was widely favoured for its lightweight durability and non-reflective dark finish. The reverse retains its original molded texture and is fitted with a period-correct brass safety-pin style hinge mechanism.
Good antique condition for its age. The vulcanite body remains sturdy with a deep dark patina, fine age-appropriate micro-crazing on the edges, and its characteristic sulfurous scent when handled. The brass pin mechanism operates smoothly and holds securely.
