An authentic late Victorian two-piece interlocking belt buckle, dating to circa 1880–1890. Crafted with a dramatic openwork framework hand-set with faceted French Jet (deep black glass) beads and molded crescent motifs surrounding two central unfaceted black glass star/shield plaques.
As a functional piece of Victorian mourning etiquette and dark fashion, French Jet mounted on japanned dark metal was widely favoured during the second and half-mourning periods for its rich texture and contrast. The reverse features a stamped japanned iron framework fitted with an interlocking central hook-and-receiver latch along with two wide horizontal bars for securing a belt strap.
Good antique condition for its age. All black glass elements are intact and securely set. The japanned iron backing shows a natural aged patina with minor surface oxidation/rust on the rear fittings consistent with age, and the two-piece clasp mechanism connects firmly.
