An authentic late Victorian mourning target rosette brooch pin, dating to circa 1880–1890. The brooch features a prominent, high-domed faceted central cabochon framed by a halo of faceted French Jet (deep black glass) beads.
As an authentic piece of Victorian dark fashion and mourning etiquette, French Jet mounted on a japanned dark iron framework was widely favoured during the second and half-mourning periods for its dramatic reflection and durable craftsmanship. The reverse exhibits authentic period construction, featuring a stamped japanned iron baseplate fitted with a hand-soldered tube hinge, an extended iron pin stem, and a simple C-clasp.
Good antique condition for its age. All faceted French Jet black glass components are present, intact, bright, and securely set. The japanned iron backing plate shows natural age-appropriate patina and minor surface oxidation/rust along the pin stem consistent with age. The iron pin stem and C-clasp function smoothly and hold securely under fabric tension.
