A genuine morning jewellery bracelet from the Victorian period, dating to around 1890,
It has been made/weaved with a thick band of human hair and finished with a rolled gold rectanguler clasp that has very pretty floral engravings.
During this period, kids were expected to take part in the culture of mourning. It is likely this hair belonged to a parent or sibling, which the child then had to wear.
The Victorians believed in Memento Mori, which translates into "remember you must die". It was their acceptance and celebration of death by keeping keepsakes of loved ones.
Structurally sound and intact, remaining in very good antique condition for its age. The woven hair band remains firm and tight throughout, with just the occasional stray hair strand as expected from age and gentle handling.
The rolled-gold clasp displays a lovely warm sheen with minor surface wear. There is a small hole on the front casing where a hanging charm or pendant would have originally attached, and the internal clasp mechanism fastens securely.
