A decorative antique lacquered wooden glove box dating to the Edwardian period, circa late 19th century to early 20th century. The box has a long, elegant form and is finished in a rich red lacquer with hand-painted decoration to the lid depicting a bird and floral motif, reflecting the Oriental inspired chinoiserie decorative styles that were popular in interiors of the time.
The elongated shape suggests it was originally intended as a glove or correspondence box, though today it would also make a beautiful decorative storage piece for jewellery, letters or keepsakes. The lid opens on its original hinges to reveal a dark stained interior, while the front features a decorative brass escutcheon where a key would once have been present.
The surface shows characterful signs of age including wear to the lacquer, small marks and areas of loss around the edges, all consistent with age and use and adding to the piece’s antique charm.
A lovely decorative antique piece that would suit cottage, traditional or maximalist interiors.
