An exquisite antique Japanese Meiji-period (circa 1890–1910) lidded trinket box, handcrafted from lightweight papier-mâché with a traditional deep black lacquer finish. The exterior is richly decorated in the gold-dust Maki-e style, depicting a continuous narrative scene of courtly figures, attendants with fans, serene pagodas, pine trees, and a sampan boat sailing open waters.

In good condition, displaying wonderful authentic character with fine micro-crazing across the gilt work and light wear along the papier-mâché rims where the underlying core shows through.

Dimensions: 6.5 x 8.5 x 8.5cm Weight: 80g
