An authentic antique carpentry sliding bevel gauge, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. A staple of traditional British workshops, the sliding bevel—or bevel gauge—was an indispensable tool for Victorian and Edwardian joiners, cabinetmakers, and shipwrights. Unlike a fixed square, its adjustable design allowed craftsmen to accurately measure, transfer, and duplicate complex angles for rafter cutting, stair building, and fine hand-cut joinery.
This traditional tool features a richly grained hardwood stock, tipped with solid brass plating at both ends to protect the timber from splitting or wearing down over decades of use. The adjustable, slotted steel blade moves smoothly and is firmly locked into position by a flush-fitting brass tension screw, a design classic often produced by historic Sheffield toolmakers such as Marples or Rabone & Sons. It shows a genuine aged patina across the metal and timber, reflecting its industrial history.
