A lovely antique Victorian belt buckle from the 19th century. Made from black glass French Jet with an iron frame, this piece would have been used as part of the Victorian mourning tradition. French Jet was used when Whitby Jet was in short supply, as they created an affordable but still well-made and attractive way to replace it, for mourning attire, still giving it that very gothic 19th century, yet elegant feel.

Overall it is in very good condition. All of the stones are intact. One stone has been replaced but it is very subtle. Victorians were really into sinching their waists, so it is likely this would have been used for a waist belt. Both pieces come apart but when together they measure 8 x 6cm.
