This is an authentic antique Victorian T-handle herb chopper, also traditionally used as a commercial mint cutter or bakers' dough scraper. Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, this piece of historic kitchenalia is a fantastic example of robust, functional British manufacturing.
Historically, tools of this configuration were widely used in both commercial kitchens and busy Victorian households. The substantial, straight-edged steel blade allowed cooks to chop cleanly through thick bundles of fresh garden herbs, mint, or dense pastry dough by applying direct downward pressure, rather than using a rocking motion.
The piece features a beautifully turned wooden T-handle with classic decorative scribed lines, secured to the central iron stem via a traditional brass washer and peened nut.
It is in very good antique condition, showing a wonderful authentic patina. The heavy-gauge steel blade exhibits honest, historic surface oxidisation and characterful pitting, while remaining structurally sound. The turned wooden handle has aged to a lovely warm, light honey tone with tight grain and minimal historic wear.
