This Victorian 1870 brooch is a wonderful example of late 19th-century novelty design. Crafted with a pewter-tone repoussé metal face mounted over a copper base plate, the central focal point features an early molded green celluloid scarab.
During this period, the Victorians were deeply fascinated by Egyptomania—a widespread design craze fueled by major 19th-century archaeological discoveries along the Nile. Artisans met high demand for Egyptian-themed fashion by combining traditional metalwork with newly invented materials like celluloid to create accessible, stylish souvenir and everyday jewellery.
The reverse retains its original period hardware, featuring an extended pin stem, tube hinge, and simple C-clasp. An excellent collectible for lovers of Victorian novelty jewellery, early plastics, and 19th-century Egyptian Revival design.
